Stocks, Bonds, Mutual Funds and ETFs

When donating appreciated securities, the full value of the security given is eligible for a charitable deduction and the giver doesn’t pay capital gains tax on the gain. Likewise, Bridgetown does not pay tax on that gain either. Such gifts can be made to our secure account at Charles Schwab:

Required Minimum Distributions & QCDs

If you are 70 ½ and/or on Required Minimum Distributions (RMD), you can give money directly from your retirement accounts directly to Bridgetown Church. These donations, while not qualifying as charitable deductions, are not taxable income to you. And as a general practice, it is usually better from a tax savings perspective to not recognize income than it is to take a charitable deduction. 

    • Use IRS worksheets to calculate your RMD and confirm what your minimum requirement is this year.

    • Make checks payable to Bridgetown Church 2120 NE Tillamook Street, Portland, OR 97212, as the qualifying non-profit to receive your gift. Up to $100,000 of a distribution from an IRA or employer-sponsored retirement account (including but not limited to your RMD) is a Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD). Complete your donation by December 31st to qualify for this current year (if you write a check from your IRA, the check needs to be deposited by Bridgetown Church by 12/31 to qualify for the current year. If your IRA/Retirement Plan custodian (Schwab, Fidelity, Vanguard, etc… issues the check, it just needs to be issued by 12/31).

Donor-Advised Fund

DAFs can be directed to issue a check to Bridgetown Church, 2120 NE Tillamook Street, Portland, OR 97212. Bridgetown is a listed Charity on Schwab Charitable and Fidelity Charitable (EIN 81-1992757).

    • Making Donor-Advised Fund donations assumes that you already have established such a fund through a DAF Sponsor. 

    • Then simply notify your DAF Sponsor that you’d like to make a grant from your DAF to Bridgetown Church, 2120 NE Tillamook Street, Portland, OR  97212.
