Primer Guide 7: Confession

Review the practice so far (10 min)

Last week, we practiced noticing and naming the gifts we see in one another, reaching out to encourage someone in our group. Paul reminds us to “encourage one another and build each other up.” As we continue growing as a Community marked by honesty and grace, let’s reflect on that practice together:

  • What was it like to reach out and encourage someone in the group? What did you notice in yourself as you did?

  • How did receiving or giving encouragement affect the way you see this Community or your place in it?

Facilitator Note: Set a timer for 10 minutes. When the timer is up, move on to the next section.

Read this Overview (2 min)

We all know the ache of our own brokenness and the ways we fall short of loving God and others well. No matter how hard we try, willpower alone can’t free us from sin—we need a Savior. Jesus tells us that sin enslaves (John 8:34), but the good news is that God has come to rescue us. Scripture promises, “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us… and purify us from all unrighteousness” (1 John 1:9).

Confession is the practice of telling the truth about our sin so we can receive God’s freely given forgiveness and healing. While it can feel vulnerable, hearing one another’s confessions and speaking God’s forgiveness over each other becomes a place of deep grace. Sin is too strong to fight alone, but in a safe, loving Community, we experience freedom together.

Because this is sacred and vulnerable work, we follow shared agreements each time we practice confession. These help us build trust, protect one another, and grow in love.

Tonight, we continue becoming a Community marked by honesty, depth, and grace through the practice of confession.

Exercise for tonight
(30 min)

Corporate confession allows us to hold one another in God’s loving presence and remind each other of the forgiveness we often struggle to believe for ourselves. Since every confession is sacred, we use the same framework each time, beginning with our Shared Community Agreements.

Our Posture: Every confession is sacred.

It is a privilege to witness someone confess sin. We are standing on holy ground together. Each confession is met with compassion and a reminder of God’s forgiveness, such as: “Thank you for sharing. God loves you and joyfully forgives you.”

Our Promise: Every confession stays in this room.

We build trust by protecting confidentiality. What is confessed here is released to Jesus and not shared elsewhere. If someone is absent, only the person who confessed may choose to share later.
Exception: If a confession includes risk of harm to self or others, the Community Leader will contact a Communities Pastor (non-urgent) or 911 (urgent).

Our Practice: Everyone participates.

We support one another by all participating. Each of us will both confess and speak God’s forgiveness to someone else.

Do we all agree to this?

(Leader: Go around and have everyone verbally agree.)

Thank you. We’ll keep revisiting these agreements as we grow in trust.

Tonight’s flow is:

  1. A shortened Examen with silent confession

  2. Corporate confession

  3. Absolution and Communion

Condensed Examen (3 min)

Let’s settle into a comfortable posture of prayer.

Prayer:
Holy Spirit, as we look back over this past week, search our hearts. Bring to mind a moment where we sinned—through what we did, what we failed to do, or what was happening in our hearts. Show us not only the action, but the deeper root beneath it.

As you bring something to mind, we silently confess it to you and receive your forgiveness. Come, Holy Spirit. We yield to you.

(Leader: Set a timer for 3 minutes.)

Closing prayer:
God, thank you for revealing our sin so you can forgive and restore us. Thank you for your mercy. Amen.

Corporate Confession

Now we’ll confess aloud to one another. Going in a circle, each person will briefly (one or two sentences) share the sin they just confessed to God.

A confession might sound like: “I confess that I spoke harshly to someone this week because I was stressed and didn’t want to slow down and listen,” or “I confess that I avoided time with God because I didn’t want to face what was going on inside me,” or “I confess that I ignored someone’s need because it felt inconvenient.”

After each person shares, the next person begins by saying something like: “Thank you for your honesty. God loves you and God forgives you. Then they share their own confession.

(Leader: Begin with your own confession. Help reinforce forgiveness if someone forgets.)

Absolution & Communion

Let’s take a quiet moment to return to God’s loving presence—the Father who runs toward us, forgives us, and restores us.

(Pause 30 seconds.)

(leader read aloud and lead the Community in Communion)
Sisters and brothers, hear the good news: “When we confess our sins, God is faithful and just to forgive us and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” (1 John 1:9). He removes our sins as far as the east is from the west. We are washed clean and restored to right relationship with him. Hallelujah! Thanks be to God.

Take the body and blood of Christ, given in love for the forgiveness of sins. Let’s eat and drink and remember him.

Exercise for the week ahead (3 min)

This week, continue developing a personal rhythm of confession. Set aside a few minutes each day or at the end of the week to prayerfully review your life with God, confess sin honestly, and receive his forgiveness.

Begin asking: “What might it look like for confession to become a regular, life-giving practice in my walk with Jesus—not just something we do in group, but a rhythm that keeps my heart soft and honest before God?”
